HOW DOES THE LEAGUE WORK
Our 8-week season is structured to include 7 consecutive weeks of competitive matches and skill development. Each session typically lasts 2.5 hours, with an optional 30-minute practice time before the start of the matches. The final week, features a double elimination playoff to determine the ultimate winner.
Each league night lets participants play four different matches.
Matches are played against randomly selected opponents and follow these guidelines:
In case of a tie after 10 throws, sudden-death rules apply:
After the match, points and win/loss results are recorded and updated on the leaderboards. Following weeks of play, the 7th and final week of each season features playoffs and a final match to crown the season champion. Refer to the Playoffs section for further details.
MINIMUM AGE
No minimum age limit is imposed, provided that at least one team member is 18 or older, or a legal parent/guardian of one of the team members is present during the event. All waivers for minors must be signed by their respective legal parent/guardian.
TARGETS
Targets must be in good condition and relatively new before the league session starts. If targets show signs of excessive wear, such as axes wobbling or dropping from the damaged area, they should be replaced to maintain fair play.
If a significant piece of wood breaks off during the game, players can request a board change, but the final decision lies with the axe throwing referee (coach).
To ensure optimal playing conditions, targets must be moistened with water from a spray bottle before league play begins. If boards remain hard, league members can request additional water application.
SCORING
Scoring rules for each match are as follows:
For the final throw, the referee will count down from 3, and axes must be thrown simultaneously. If a player's axe hits the target before their opponent's axe is thrown, the late thrower scores 0 points.
Additional rules include:
AXES
You're welcome to bring your own axe, but please note that there are certain restrictions to ensure everyone's safety. We require axes to have a length between 13-17 inches, a wood handle, a blade length of no more than 4 inches, and a head weight between 1.25-1.75 pounds. It's a good idea to try out our house hatchets first before purchasing your own, to get a feel for what you like. And don't forget to wear closed-toe shoes for your own protection!
Is it possible for me to miss a week of league or arrive late?
Yes! We know everyone's schedules aren't always flexible. You can be up to an hour late. As long as you make it to 4 out of the scheduled weeks, you're eligible for the playoffs.
